An ocean of data; Big data propels Ocean Science (Prof. Carlos M. Duarte, KAUST)

Developments in data acquisition and sharing are opening up opportunities to apply big-date approaches across multiple areas of ocean research. Conscious of the many opportunities that collaboration between data scientists and marine scientists can deliver, KAUST has developed a number of interdisciplinary programs using bid-data approaches to tackle a number of questions in marine science.

In this presentation I will give a succinct overview of these research programs, spanning from understanding the movement of large marine animals in the ocean to resolving ocean biodiversity and functioning through massive sequencing approaches. I will then highlight other opportunities and what have been, the keys for successful collaboration between data and marine scientists at KAUST, which can then be translated to propel similar synergies in other environments.
